Nitrogen Generators

Traditionally, businesses purchase the nitrogen gas required for their operations from third-party suppliers, with cylinders delivered to site as needed. While this approach is still common, it often comes with ongoing costs, delivery scheduling, and the need to store and handle high-pressure gas cylinders.

On-site nitrogen generation provides a safer, more reliable and cost-effective alternative. By installing a nitrogen generator, businesses can produce their own nitrogen directly from their compressed air system, giving them full control over their gas supply.

Installation is typically straightforward and can be integrated with existing compressed air equipment with minimal disruption to operations. Once in place, an on-site nitrogen generator allows you to produce nitrogen on demand, ensuring a continuous and dependable supply whenever your process requires it.

BENEFITS OF A

NITROGEN GENERATOR
Piston compressors offer a number of benefits that make them a popular choice for many businesses and workshops:

Cost Effective

Generating nitrogen onsite can significantly reduce your operating costs.

Reliability of Supply

A generator can provide a consistent supply of nitrogen for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Enhanced Safety

Generators remove the need to store high pressure gas cylinders onsite.

Reduced Downtime

An on demand supply and no reliance on deliveries mean a reduction in downtime.

Logistics

Generators give you the exact purity of nitrogen you need for your applications.

Compact Design

Nitrogen generators takes up less floor space than nitrogen canisters.

How Does a Nitrogen Generator Work?

The air we breathe is made up of approximately 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, along with small amounts of other gases. Nitrogen generators work by separating these gases from compressed air to produce a reliable supply of high-purity nitrogen.

The compressed air first passes through a filtration and drying stage to remove contaminants such as oil, moisture and particles. The nitrogen generator then separates the nitrogen from the oxygen and other gases, delivering a controlled stream of nitrogen suitable for your application.

There are two main technologies used for on-site nitrogen generation:

Membrane Nitrogen Generators

Membrane generators separate nitrogen and oxygen using specially designed membrane fibres. They are compact, simple and ideal for applications where ultra-high purity nitrogen is not required.

PSA Nitrogen Generators (Pressure Swing Adsorption)

PSA generators use carbon molecular sieve technology to separate nitrogen from oxygen under pressure. This method can produce much higher nitrogen purity levels, making it suitable for demanding applications such as food processing, laser cutting and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The required nitrogen purity level will determine which generator type is most suitable. For example, applications such as tyre inflation or fire prevention systems typically require lower purity nitrogen, making membrane generators a practical solution. In contrast, industries such as food packaging require very high purity nitrogen, where PSA generators are the preferred option.
